The protagonist of this wonderful experience tells us about his journey of more than 100 km on foot , from the far north to the extreme south of the west coast of Fuerteventura , the wildest and most unspoiled side of the island.
An exciting journey that lasted a total of six days and was not without dangers and unforeseen events.
We contacted Jose to let him tell us more about this incredible experience, we were very curious to know every detail of the trip, how and why he did it.
For our part, we also want to warn you that it is not an excursion for tourists and hikers. It is a very dangerous route that crosses deserted areas of the island, cliffs and inaccessible points of the coast of Fuerteventura.
“My name is Jose Assima, let me introduce myself, I was born in Gran Canaria, but I grew up in Fuerteventura since I was 5 years old, at 17 I left the island for study reasons and I stayed 10 years abroad, in Seville, Barcelona, New York and Berlin.
I studied fine arts specializing in photography and design.
Then I returned to Fuerteventura because I realized that like here you don’t live anywhere.
I started to express everything I learned, always influenced by the island.
I opened an Instagram account, exhibited paintings in various centers, carried out various projects and above all I dealt with aerial photography and video.
I got great results, I am the photographer of the famous singer El Vega and I also worked with Maria Isabel.
I live in Fuerteventura and I no longer want to go and live elsewhere, I decided to stay on this island and it is here that I want to continue to grow.
Since I returned to the island I wanted to have this experience, to discover this part of Fuerteventura better.
The west coast is a little-known coast and I am very curious, even more so for our beloved island.
I live in El Cotillo and have always looked south with the desire to walk it.
Every September that passed I thought about it, but I had never jumped in.
Until thanks to instagram I found two guys who I knew would want to join: jonystravels y theafrocanario.
Without anticipating anything, I put my friends in a group on WhatsApp and then I wrote: “We start on September 15th”, and so it was, they followed me with a pinch of madness.
For me it was the first time, I didn’t think I would make it, but the motivation to continue filming and discover the island made me overcome the fatigue, it took a lot of mental strength.
At first I thought I would do it alone, but it is very dangerous, so I put together a group of 3 people, it seemed like a good number for this adventure.
Before starting this journey I was very nervous, I knew it would be complicated and dangerous.
But we were overcoming obstacles little by little and facing fears.
It is not a path that I recommend to everyone, it is uninhabited land, there is almost no population and there are no supermarkets.
There are many cliffs, rocks that break off …
You have to plan your trip well.
Physically I didn’t have any problems even if I didn’t have much preparation.
As I said before, it was my mind that pushed me to keep walking, no matter how tired I was.
But it is not within everyone’s reach, the terrain is very complicated and there are also sections where you have to climb a lot, climb or wait for the tide to go down in order to continue.
We did our research before leaving with people who had already done it and distributed water and food throughout the island before starting the adventure.
We had a lot of difficulties, we even ran out of water, but fortunately we found help and this allowed us to continue walking.
I liked everything, every corner, every landscape.
The entire coastline is impressive, there is no point that is not worth seeing.
Personally, I was more impressed by what I didn’t know yet, namely the stretch between La Pared and Cofete.
Final stretch, and perhaps the most difficult, because they are all sandy areas.
These days there has been a lot of laughter, a lot of despair, blood and sweat, a fallen drone, an exploded iPhone, a lost “GoPro”, a wet camera, many blisters and tears …
But what has remained most impressed are the images to be able to describe this adventure.
Although it was an incredible experience for me, I wouldn’t do it again, this kind of adventure is only done once.
But I recommend it!
